The University Writing Program’s mission is to help students become agile writers: people who understand writing as an intellectual practice and a way to make things happen in the world. We pursue this mission through our courses, partnerships across campus, and collaborations with the communities of Baltimore City.

Writing Program Leadership

After 10 years at Georgetown University, as Associate Director of the Writing Program and teaching track faculty in English, I came to Johns Hopkins University in 2021.

Since then, the Johns Hopkins University Writing Program has quadrupled in size in order to bring more writing classes to many more JHU students. On this page, you’ll find a link to our website, a link to our Teaching Writing Toolkit (a grant funded writing pedagogy resources for writing in the discpilines), and a short film about our innovative first-year writing course, Reintroduction to Writing.

2 projects that don’t yet feature on our program website or on this site, are Writing with and The Copia Project, which advance our core values of community engagement and energizing the culture of writing on campus and beyond.

Writing with is a partnership with JHU’s Center for Social Concern through which we offer community-engaged writing courses linked to non-profits in Baltimore and beyond.

The Copia Project is a collection of loosely related projects and events that aim to broaden and diversify how students, faculty, and our neighbors think about and practice writing. These include campus and community events, our writer in residence program, and more.
